Daytona Beach

The area is world renowned for its beach. It achieved unique fame from its 23-mile, 500-foot-wide stretch of hard-packed sand which served as a speedway in the early days of the automobile. Many speed records were set on this beach in years gone by. Autos are still allowed but the speed is now limited to 10 miles-per-hour.

The area is actually a collection of a number of beach communities that join to create a large seaside park This stretches from Ormond-By-the-Sea to the north down to Ponce Inlet to the south. There are two distinct regions. The "beach side" barrier peninsula along the Atlantic Ocean is separated from the "mainland" to the east by the Halifax River.

A Boardwalk offers numerous amusement centers, rides, mini-golf, arcades, and snack bars. There are also a number of disco spots and clubs along this strip. The whole area is filled with a festive atmosphere - day and night.

Jet skis, sailboards and powerboats can be rented on the Halifax River and the Intracoastal Waterway. Floats, umbrellas, windsurfers, bicycles, four-wheelers and motor scooters can be rented. This is one of the few beaches anywhere that allow motor vehicles to be driven on it. It is quite a fascinating experience to drive on along the Atlantic Ocean.

This is one of the "in" places to be during Spring Break. During the March/April break, many thousands of students from all over the country descend on this area to take a break from the rigors of college.

Daytona International Speedway is one of the finest motor-racing facilities in the country where many NASCAR, auto and motorcycle races are held including the famous Daytona 500. This 2.5 mile, high-speed, 31 degree high-banked raceway has grandstand seating for over one hundred thousand spectators.  See current schedule of events at Speedway Schedule.

Daytona USA is the official attraction of NASCAR. It is located just outside the Speedway. This is a fascinating attraction where one can get behind-the-scenes video and film perspectives and a variety of racing exhibits and activities. Tours out onto the speedway itself are available. Car buffs may also consider visiting the Klassix Auto Museum where they will find vintage vehicles on display including an impressive collections of Corvettes.

The area has a variety of golf courses and is home to the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA).

To the south is the impressive red-brick, Ponce de Leon Inlet lighthouse. This 175 foot lighthouse was built in 1887 and still functions today. The grounds contain a marine museum and restored keeper's cottages. Visitors may climb to the top of the lighthouse.
