Florida Beaches - Fort Myers Beach

Fort Myers Beach is part of a series of spectacular beaches along the southwest coast of Florida. It has seven miles of white, sandy beaches, warm and tranquil waters, palm trees and casual Florida ambience. If this is not enough, there are Sanibel Island and Captiva to the north and Lovers Key to the south with equally spectacular beaches.

Fort Myers Beach is considered a comparatively safe beach, which is the result of a gentle beach slope into the sea, little wave action and the absence of undertows and currents. Family-friendly, it is a great beach for kids. There are a lot of shells, which make for great sea-shelling, but one may also consider water shoes.

Like many west coast Florida beaches, Fort Myers Beach is a barrier island. San Carlos Blvd is the main access from the mainland. Many public beach access points can be identified by the blue and white signs that indicate access. Parking is limited at many of these points, but some of the most secluded beach spots can be found at these access points.

There are a couple of parks on the north end of Fort Myers Beach. Bowditch Point Regional Park offers access to both the Gulf and bayside (Intracoastal). It has picnic tables, grills, restrooms, hiking trails, and of course, beaches. Lynn Hall Memorial Park is another excellent park with covered picnic areas, restrooms, a playground for kids, a fishing pier, good parking, nearby shops and restaurants.

Jet skiing, kayak rentals and parasailing are available directly from the beach. Cabanas, beach chairs and umbrella rentals are available in selected locations. Various tours and excursions are available including boat rentals, dinner cruises, Everglades tours, fishing and eco/nature tours.

The central point for many activities at Fort Myers Beach is "Times Square" - the small downtown area. It has restaurants and shops, booths for arranging excursions and rentals, outdoor dining and occasionally, street performers.
